As a long-time lover of fashion, one of my favourite parts of the fashion calendar are the street styles worn during fashion weeks by people much more glamorous than thyself.
These women, with their Carrie Bradshaw-like ability to spend all day (and night) in heels and gorgeous get-ups, has always been a form of escapism to me.
Yet, while flicking through the street style photos from Paris’ Couture week, I couldn’t help but notice an alarming trend coming back into fashion – wide waist belts.
As someone who was a teenager in the mid-naughties, I am well accustomed to the wide waist belt.
I would pour over episodes of The Hills and The OC, trying as best as I could to match their fashion choices as they were – at the time – the epitome of “cool girls”.
Yet, ten years later, like many other trends, it’s seeing a resurgence. And an unwelcome one at that.
Yes the women pictured (Giorgia Tordini and Adwoa Aboah) look wonderful and I particularly love Giorgia’s dress-over-bralette scenario. But wide waist belts are possibly one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever owned.
For I am not a size 8, am not the owner of a flat stomach and know these belts would make sitting unbearable.
So please, oh holy fashion gods, leave this trend where it belongs.
